Today, I’m going to share about my very first experience buying something from a seafood market. I wanted to do this in Korea–there is just something so cool about getting fresh food and preparing it yourself, but I kept chickening out. It is just not easy for a city girl like my self because I have NO idea what anything is or how to cook it. But it was my first Friday in Croatia and I was determined to not come home empty handed!

The Plan

Get Squid. But when I saw colorless shapeless masses of dead squid on the table, I just couldn’t do it. I had read articles on how to clean them but it was daunting to say the least. Then, I looked at all the fish which looked back at me and I kept thinking about puffer fish and wondering if I was going to somehow poison myself on accident. If I hadn’t promised myself that I would not leave empty handed, I would have left right then and there!

What I Got

Prawns! I’ve seen people cook this before in Korea so I figured I would probably be able to figure it out! They are smaller animals so I figured that they should be easier to deal with… The lady asked me how many I wanted and I completely froze, I don’t usually use kilos back home so she just gave me half a kilo.That’s a LOT of seafood for one person! 

The Prep Process

Traumatizing! I just found it to be really hard working with all the legs and antennae. My live off the land/survivor rating is about a -2 right now. It was embarrassingly hard for me but also made me realize that I want to do something about this! I don’t want to be the kind of girl who can only eat seafood if it comes in a Filet-o-fish from McDonalds or it’s been cut up, precooked, and packaged for me. Basically, I’m going to start working on this. This is going to change! 

The Recipe

  1. I browned garlic with olive oil.
  2. I added the shrimp in and cooked them half way.
  3. Then I squeezed fresh lemon over the top.
  4. I served it with rice.

Once they were finally on the plate I was still a little queasy from the whole cleaning process but they tasted so fresh and amazing!! 

My New Resolution

I’m going to say this was a good first try but hopefully only the beginning of my new mission: build more fundamental skills that are quickly being lost amid fast food joints and supermarket isles. I am determined to get better at making wholesome meals out of food that I get in its original form.
